Delta Government announces dissolution of Delta Queens FC management

In a sweeping move to overhaul the structure of one of Nigeria’s most successful women’s football clubs, the Delta State Government has dissolved the entire setup of Delta Queens Football Club, including its management board, technical crew, and players.


The announcement was made through an official statement issued by the Delta State Sports Commission.


The Commission’s Director of Public Relations, Franka Okonma, who signed the release, confirmed that the decision was part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at reviving the club’s declining performance in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL).


“This dissolution is necessary to reposition the club for greater efficiency, professionalism, and competitiveness. A new management board, technical crew, and a fresh set of players will be constituted shortly,” the statement read.


Delta Queens, based in Asaba, the Delta State capital, is a household name in Nigerian women’s football.


The club, which plays its home matches at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, has produced several national team players and won multiple domestic titles. However, the team has endured a disappointing run in the current league season, prompting growing concerns from fans and stakeholders.


Until the dissolution, the team was under the technical leadership of Coach Peter Dedevbo. Despite his pedigree and past successes, the team failed to deliver consistent results, ultimately leading to the government’s decision to wipe the slate clean.


The Sports Commission assured the public that efforts are already underway to rebuild the club with a new vision and strategy, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to sports development, especially in women’s football.


More updates on the reconstitution of the club's leadership and squad are expected in the coming weeks.
