2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 28: Defending champions Remo Stars FC return to fortress Ikenne in style

Posted : 02 March 2026

There are moments in a season that can restore belief, and for the defending champions, Remo Stars, their 2–0 win over Katsina United could prove to be one of them.

Back at their home ground in Ikenne, the Sky Blue Stars delivered a disciplined performance to secure their second league victory of the year, easing concerns around a campaign that had started to lose direction.

Second Half Sparks Team Revival

After a tight first half with few clear chances, the breakthrough came just after the hour mark.

Haruna Hadi, lively throughout the game, latched onto a defence-splitting pass from Albert Korvah in the 60th minute and calmly finished past the Katsina United goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Two minutes later, the forward doubled the lead. He reacted quickly to a neat layoff from Victor Mbaoma to score his second goal of the afternoon, putting the result beyond doubt.

The brace secured all three points and reflected renewed attacking confidence under newly appointed head coach Usman Abdallah, who took charge last Thursday.

Ending a Painful Run

Sunday’s victory ended an eight-match winless streak that had dragged the champions into uncomfortable territory. Their previous win came on January 14th, a narrow 1–0 victory over Ikorodu City in a South-West derby.

That match had also marked their return to Ikenne after renovation works. However, crowd-related disturbances in subsequent fixtures forced the team to relocate to Ibadan temporarily and later to Akure,  a period during which Remo Stars lost five matches and drew two.

The disruption appeared to affect the team’s rhythm, but Sunday’s home performance suggested a renewed sense of stability.

A Statement Beyond Three Points

More than just three points, the win sends a message. The defending champions showed organisation and attacking intent, defining their title-winning season.

With confidence returning and new leadership in place, Remo Stars may yet steady their title defence.

For now, Ikenne has found its voice again, and the Sky Blue Stars have found momentum.
