Deborah Abiodun Promises Super Falcons Will Be Ready for Malawi Test

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has assured Nigerians that the team will approach its opening match of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Malawi with full focus and determination.

The energetic midfielder, widely nicknamed "Kanté" because of her relentless work rate and ball-winning ability, said Nigeria will treat the tournament debutants with respect as the defending champions begin their quest for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's Group C encounter, Abiodun stressed that the Super Falcons never underestimate any opponent, regardless of their reputation or experience.

"The Super Falcons are always dedicated regardless of the opponent we are facing. We always bring our A game because there's no time to underrate any team," she said.

Abiodun acknowledged that Malawi possess dangerous attacking players capable of causing problems if given space. She singled out the Scorchers' pace and attacking quality as areas Nigeria must be prepared to handle throughout the contest.

"They have really good strikers and fast, pacey players. So, as usual, we are here to bring our A game and great determination from every one of us," Abiodun added.

The midfielder also expressed confidence in the strength of the Nigerian squad, insisting the Super Falcons have enough quality to secure maximum points in their opening fixture.

"I strongly believe in my team. I feel we are a very direct attacking team. The goal is to achieve three points and put all the balls in the net as much as we can," she said.

Abiodun is expected to play a vital role in Nigeria's midfield during the tournament. Her ability to recover possession, shield the defence, and support attacks has made her one of the team's most important players despite her young age.

Nigeria heads into the competition as Africa's most successful women's national team and will be aiming to defend the title they won after defeating hosts Morocco in last year's final. A positive result against Malawi would strengthen the Super Falcons' chances of progressing from Group C, which also includes Zambia and Egypt.

With expectations high, Nigeria will be looking to make a strong statement in Rabat, while Abiodun will hope her energy and determination can help the Super Falcons begin their title defence with a convincing victory.
