Matthijs de Ligt rescued Manchester United with a 96th-minute equaliser as they drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling Premier League clash on Saturday, denying Spurs what seemed a certain victory.
United took the lead in the 32nd minute when Bryan Mbuemo scored with the first shot on target of the game, heading home Amad Diallo’s perfectly weighted cross after Tottenham failed to clear their lines. The goal injected some life into what had been a subdued first half, though Spurs offered little in response and were met with boos from their supporters at halftime.
Spurs improved after the break and were rewarded late on when substitute Mathys Tel levelled in the 84th minute, sparking a late surge. Richarlison then looked to have completed the comeback with a close-range finish in stoppage time, putting the hosts 2-1 up.
However, United refused to give in. Deep into added time, Bruno Fernandes delivered a pinpoint corner that found de Ligt, who rose highest to head home and secure a dramatic point for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The result extends United’s unbeaten run to five matches, while both teams now sit on 18 points from 11 games — Spurs in third place and United seventh, separated only by goal difference.
It was a night of mixed emotions for both sides: Spurs missed the chance to move closer to league leaders, while United showed resilience once again, salvaging a crucial result in the dying moments.
