David Akintola Returns to Omonia Nicosia on Two-Year Deal

Posted : 10 September 2026

Cyprus-based club Omonia Nicosia have completed the signing of Nigerian forward David Akintola from Hull City, bringing the experienced attacker back to a club he previously represented.

Omonia confirmed the transfer on Thursday, September 10, announcing that Akintola has signed a two-year contract. The 30-year-old will wear the No. 8 shirt during his second spell with the club.

Akintola is already familiar to Omonia supporters and the Cypriot league. He previously played for the club during the 2019-20 season after joining on loan during the January transfer window.

During that first spell, the Nigerian featured in seven matches and provided two assists. He was also part of the Omonia squad that finished top of the Cypriot league when the season was ended early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The forward returns to Cyprus after spending the past year with Hull City. He joined the English club in August 2025 following his departure from Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor.

Akintola was part of Hull's historic promotion campaign last season. The Tigers returned to the Premier League after a nine-year absence, although the Nigerian did not make a Premier League appearance before leaving the club.

His final appearance for Hull came on August 28, 2026, when he featured in the EFL Cup. He now begins another chapter of his European career with Omonia.

Before moving to England, Akintola spent several seasons in Turkey. He represented Adana Demirspor, Çaykur Rizespor and Hatayspor during a five-year period in the Turkish top flight.

The Nigerian began his European career at Danish club FC Midtjylland after making the move abroad at the age of 18. His career has since taken him through Denmark, Cyprus, Turkey and England.

Omonia will hope Akintola's previous experience in Cyprus helps him settle quickly. The club have made a strong start to the 2026-27 domestic campaign, including a 4-1 victory over Aris in their second league match.

Akintola will now compete for a regular attacking role as Omonia pursue domestic success and prepare for their European commitments. His return also gives the Nigerian another opportunity to revive his career after an interrupted spell in English football.
