David Akintola Leaves Hull City as Semi Ajayi Leads Nigerian Presence

David Akintola has left Hull City for Cypriot side Omonia after the two clubs reached an agreement for the Nigerian winger's permanent transfer. His departure leaves Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi as the only Nigerian player remaining in Hull City's first-team squad.

Omonia confirmed the signing on Thursday, announcing that Akintola has agreed to a two-year contract. The 30-year-old returns to the Cypriot club after previously spending part of the 2019-20 season there on loan from Danish side FC Midtjylland.

Akintola joined Hull City in August 2025 after leaving Turkish club Çaykur Rizespor. He made 20 Championship appearances during his first season, scoring once and providing two assists as the Tigers secured promotion to the Premier League.

His most important contribution came as part of Hull's promotion campaign, although his involvement became limited during the second half of the season. He was eventually involved in the club's successful promotion push but did not feature in the 1-0 Championship play-off final victory over Middlesbrough at Wembley.

The winger's final Hull appearance came in the EFL Cup against Preston North End on August 28, 2026. He did not make a Premier League appearance before completing his return to Omonia. The Cypriot club confirmed that Akintola has signed until 2028.

While Akintola's English top-flight opportunity has ended without a Premier League appearance, Ajayi has made an immediate impact following Hull's return to the division.

The Super Eagles centre-back has started all three of Hull's Premier League matches. He scored the opening goal in the 2-0 victory over Manchester United before helping the Tigers keep clean sheets against Coventry City and Aston Villa.

Hull followed the win over United with a 1-0 victory at Coventry before drawing 0-0 with Aston Villa. The unbeaten start has given Jakirović's team seven points from three matches and placed them third in the Premier League behind Arsenal and Manchester City.

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has praised Ajayi for his contribution to Hull's impressive start. The defender's form has also strengthened his position as an experienced option for the Super Eagles ahead of upcoming international assignments.

Akintola now begins a new chapter in Cyprus, where he already has experience and a connection with Omonia supporters. Ajayi, meanwhile, remains at the center of Hull's ambitious Premier League return as the Tigers look to maintain their unbeaten start.
