2026/2027 Euromatch NPFL Match Day 2: Rivers United Maintain Perfect Start, Compound Wolves’ Early-Season Woes

Rivers United continued their impressive start to the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a 2-0 victory over Warri Wolves at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday.

The result gave the Pride of Rivers back-to-back league victories and six points from their opening two matches, with both wins secured on home soil.

The hosts gradually took control after a cautious opening, with Wasiu Falolu registering Rivers United’s first notable attempt in the 14th minute after being set up by Shehu Dabai.

The Warri Wolves goalkeeper, however, was equal to the effort as both sides continued to search for an opening.

Rivers United eventually broke the deadlock through Dabai, who finished a well-worked attacking move involving Ochobi Elias.

Elias created space before finding Dabai inside the box, allowing the midfielder to take one touch and calmly place the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

The goal continued Dabai’s excellent beginning to the league campaign, having also scored the opener in Rivers United’s 2-1 victory over Plateau United on Match Day One.

His latest strike made him the first Rivers United player to score in consecutive league matches this season.

Warri Wolves struggled to create a meaningful response before the break, while Rivers United were unable to extend their advantage despite remaining the more threatening side.

The Port Harcourt club therefore entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The second half produced fewer clear-cut chances as Wolves attempted to remain in contention, but Rivers United maintained their grip on the contest.

Head coach Finidi George then introduced Chinemerem Ugwueze in the 68th minute, replacing Falolu.

The substitute needed only seven minutes to make a decisive impact.

Once again, Elias was at the heart of the move, racing down the right flank before sending a low delivery across the face of goal.

Ugwueze timed his movement perfectly and met the cross with a first-time finish to double Rivers United’s advantage in the 75th minute.

The goal capped an immediate impact from the substitute and gave the hosts the cushion they needed to see out the remainder of the contest.

Warri Wolves nearly reduced the deficit shortly afterwards when their effort struck the crossbar, but Rivers United’s defence reacted quickly to prevent a follow-up.

The hosts subsequently managed the closing stages effectively to secure their second consecutive league victory.

The result also extended Rivers United’s dominance in recent meetings with Warri Wolves, with the Pride of Rivers now recording seven victories in their last nine encounters, while Wolves have won twice.

Rivers United have scored 14 goals against Wolves in those nine meetings, compared with six for the visitors.

With six points from two matches, Rivers United sit third on the NPFL table, while Warri Wolves are 19th without a point from their opening two games.

Rivers United will next travel to face Nasarawa United as they seek to maintain their unbeaten start to the domestic campaign.
