Cubarsi Targets World Cup Glory After Spain Finish Top of Group H

Posted : 27 June 2026

Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí has described his first FIFA World Cup as a dream after playing a key role in Spain's unbeaten run to the top of Group H at the 2026 tournament.

The 19-year-old centre-back has been one of Spain's standout performers during the group stage. His composed displays alongside Aymeric Laporte have helped La Roja finish ahead of Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde without conceding a single goal.

Reflecting on the achievement, Cubarsi said he was proud to represent his country on football's biggest stage while having the support of his family close by.

"I’m living a dream by being able to enjoy my first World Cup," he said. "Having my family close to me makes me incredibly proud. They are always supporting me, and that helps me stay calm and play my football."

Despite Spain's impressive defensive record, the Barcelona academy graduate believes there is still room for improvement as the knockout rounds begin.

He admitted Spain were not at their sharpest in the early stages of the group phase but praised the team's ability to grow into matches. Cubarsi said the players understand the level of competition will increase and stressed the need to remain united if they hope to challenge for the title.

The young defender also highlighted the importance of Spain's defensive discipline. He credited goalkeeper Unai Simón and the back line for keeping three consecutive clean sheets, adding that a strong defence gives Spain confidence because of the attacking quality available further forward.

Cubarsi also discussed his own development after recording an outstanding passing accuracy during Spain's final group match. He said his focus is always on helping the team, whether by building attacks from the back or contributing defensively, while continuing to earn the trust of the coaching staff.

The teenager added that competition within the squad keeps everyone motivated and insisted every player is ready to contribute whenever called upon.

Looking ahead to the knockout stage, Cubarsi said Spain have achieved their first objective by winning the group but must now recover and prepare for the tougher challenges that lie ahead.

His calm performances throughout the tournament have further enhanced his growing reputation. Already established as a regular for Barcelona, Cubarsi is now proving himself on the global stage and is expected to remain a key figure as Spain pursue a sixth FIFA World Cup semi-final appearance.
