Crystal Palace loanee with 20 clean sheets named in League Two Team

Posted : 28 April 2025

Owen Goodman, currently on loan at AFC Wimbledon from Crystal Palace, has been recognized for his exceptional performances this season, earning a place in the EFL League Two Team of the Season. The young goalkeeper's consistent form has made him one of the standout players in his division.

Born in London, Goodman holds eligibility to represent three countries internationally: Nigeria, England, and Canada. His dual-nationality status has attracted attention from multiple national football associations, particularly the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Goodman has previously been linked with the NFF, receiving a call-up to a Flying Eagles training camp ahead of the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. The NFF has continued to monitor his progress, with discussions regarding his potential future involvement with the Super Eagles.

In a move that fueled speculation about his international future, Goodman met with NFF President Ibrahim Gusau last summer. The meeting sparked further rumors that Goodman has not ruled out representing Nigeria, despite his previous appearances for England and Canada at youth levels.

The 2024-2025 season has been a standout campaign for Goodman, who recently extended his impressive clean sheet tally to 21 after a 0-0 draw with Chesterfield on April 18. Of those, 20 came in League Two, with one in the FA Cup. His remarkable form has placed him among the best goalkeepers in the division.

No other goalkeeper in League Two has managed more clean sheets than Goodman so far this season, sharing this honor with Matt Macey of Colchester United. Goodman’s tally is a testament to his skill and consistency in goal for AFC Wimbledon.

In the context of English football’s top four divisions, Goodman’s clean sheet record is notable, as only Burnley’s James Trafford (33) and Leeds United’s Illan Meslier (21) have surpassed his tally of 21 clean sheets this season. Goodman has also received four call-ups to Premier League games, although he remained an unused substitute in matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, and Southampton during the 2022-2023 season.
