Croatia revived their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama on Tuesday, securing three crucial points and keeping their hopes of reaching the last 32 intact. The result eliminated Panama from contention after the Central American side suffered its second defeat of the tournament.
The Croatian team entered the match under pressure following a 4-2 loss to England in their Group L opener. Determined to respond, the 2018 and 2022 World Cup semifinalists delivered a disciplined performance and eventually found the breakthrough early in the second half.
The decisive moment arrived in the 54th minute when Ante Budimir converted a cross from Josip Stanisic, sending the predominantly Croatian crowd inside Toronto's stadium into celebration. The goal proved enough to separate the two teams in a tightly contested encounter.
Panama had opportunities of their own, particularly in the first half. Jose Luis Rodriguez came close to opening the scoring in the 23rd minute when his header was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. The save ensured the match remained level heading into the break.
Croatia nearly doubled its advantage shortly after taking the lead. Luka Modric delivered a precise pass that released Marco Pasalic through on goal, but Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera denied the first attempt before Pasalic sent the rebound over the bar.
Despite trailing, Panama continued to push forward in search of an equalizer. However, the team was unable to find a breakthrough, extending its scoreless run at the tournament. Panama will conclude its campaign against England on Friday.
Following the match, Panama coach Thomas Christiansen praised his players for their effort against a higher-ranked opponent. Although disappointed by the result, he expressed pride in the team's performance and emphasized that the experience gained from competing on the world stage would benefit the squad moving forward.
The contest also marked a historic milestone for Croatia captain Luka Modric, who made his 200th international appearance. The veteran midfielder received a warm ovation when he was substituted in the 81st minute and was later celebrated by teammates after the final whistle.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic paid tribute to Modric's character, describing him as a natural leader whose influence comes through his actions rather than authority. Dalic also highlighted the midfielder's humility, noting that Modric is not someone who seeks personal recognition despite his remarkable achievements.
With three points from two matches, Croatia will now face Ghana in a decisive clash for a place in the knockout stage. Ghana moved to four points after drawing 0-0 with England earlier in the day, setting up a crucial final-round encounter.
