Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 41, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year career with his country. The Al-Nassr forward leaves the national team as men's international football's all-time leading goalscorer with 146 goals and record appearance holder with 234 caps.
Ronaldo confirmed his decision in an emotional video message, revealing that he was ready to hand over Portugal's famous number seven shirt to the next generation. He reflected on the privilege of representing his country since making his debut in August 2003, describing his international journey as one that had changed his life forever.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner enjoyed several memorable achievements with Portugal, most notably leading the nation to victory at Euro 2016. He also helped his country secure two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025, while representing Portugal at six European Championships and six World Cups.
His announcement comes weeks after a disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, which resulted in Ronaldo leaving the national team's training camp in September. The forward was subsequently handed a 30-day suspension and a fine after failing to remain with the squad.
The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed its intention to organise a special farewell tribute to honour Ronaldo's contribution to the national team. The federation said supporters and the country deserved an opportunity to celebrate a player who had given so much to Portuguese football.
Ronaldo's retirement brings to a close one of the most remarkable international careers in football history. Although he will no longer represent Portugal, he is expected to continue playing club football with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
