Cristiano Ronaldo Equals World Cup Qualifying Goals as Portugal Edge Hungary

Posted : 10 September 2025

Cristiano Ronaldo added another milestone to his legendary career as he became the joint-top goalscorer in World Cup qualifying history during Portugal’s 3-2 victory over Hungary on Tuesday.

The Portugal captain converted a penalty to score his 39th goal in World Cup qualifiers, equaling the record held by Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz, who retired in 2016. The strike came just days after Ronaldo netted twice in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Armenia, taking his tally for this qualifying campaign to three goals in two matches.

“Two games, two wins, let’s go Portugal,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram after the win in Budapest.

The Al Nassr forward will have the chance to move clear at the top of the standings when Portugal continue their campaign against Ireland on October 11.

While Ronaldo reached another record, Lionel Messi achieved a milestone of his own by finishing as the top scorer in South American qualifying for the first time in his career. The Argentina captain ended with eight goals, one more than Colombia’s Luis Díaz and Bolivia’s Miguel Terceros.

Messi, who was rested during Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Ecuador on Tuesday, struck twice last week in a 3-0 win over Venezuela, likely his final competitive match on home soil. At 38 years old, he has now scored 114 goals in 194 games for Argentina.

In contrast, Ronaldo remains the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 141 goals in 223 appearances for Portugal, adding further weight to his claim as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Both icons remain at the heart of their national teams’ ambitions as they chase qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they could yet extend their historic rivalry on football’s grandest stage.
