Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp in Denmark after head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed that the captain would not start Thursday’s Nations League match against Denmark. Ronaldo announced his departure on Wednesday following a meeting with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
The 41-year-old had been expected to train with his teammates at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium but left the venue shortly after Jesus addressed the media. The Portuguese Football Federation later confirmed that Ronaldo had departed, adding that preparations for the upcoming fixtures would continue with the remaining squad members.
Ronaldo said in an Instagram statement that his decision came after Jesus’ press conference and his conversation with Proença. He added that he would explain his reasons to the Portuguese public “in due course” while wishing the national team and his teammates success.
The situation follows Ronaldo’s omission from Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on Sunday. Jesus had told him he could be introduced from the bench but ultimately decided not to use him during the match. Ronaldo subsequently worked separately in the gym on Monday and Tuesday, although the federation did not report an injury.
Jesus had denied that there was a serious dispute with Ronaldo and said the forward had been disappointed after remaining on the bench against Norway. The coach maintained that there had been no major incident and said Ronaldo had accepted that team-selection decisions were his responsibility.
For the Denmark fixture, Jesus indicated that AC Milan striker Gonçalo Ramos was expected to start again after scoring Portugal’s winner against Norway. He said Ronaldo could potentially have been used later in the match if required, but that the final decision would depend on the circumstances.
Ronaldo’s departure has raised questions about his immediate future with Portugal, although neither the player nor the federation has announced a retirement or permanent separation. The veteran forward remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.
The incident comes during Jesus’ early tenure as Portugal coach and ahead of two Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Norway. Ronaldo had previously indicated that he was continuing his international career while pursuing a landmark 1,000 career goals.
