Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he will not participate in this month’s Club World Cup, having turned down offers from some of the competing teams. The 40-year-old’s contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr is set to expire at the end of June.
Despite speculation fueled by FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s suggestion that Ronaldo might join one of the tournament teams after Al-Nassr failed to qualify, the forward made it clear he won’t be involved.
Ronaldo revealed that while several clubs approached him, he chose to decline those offers, explaining that “you can’t try and do everything.” After Al-Nassr’s final league game in May, he hinted at moving on by posting on social media that “the chapter is over,” which sparked rumors of an imminent transfer. However, insiders have since indicated the club remains optimistic about securing a contract extension for the striker.
Ahead of Portugal’s Nations League final against Spain, Ronaldo said his future was “almost final” but did not disclose details. Since joining Al-Nassr in 2023 after his Manchester United departure, Ronaldo has been prolific, netting 99 goals in 111 appearances, including 35 in 41 matches last season. He also scored the decisive goal in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Germany, helping his nation reach the Nations League final.
