Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last, signaling the approaching end of one of the most remarkable careers in football history.
The 40-year-old forward, who has scored over 950 goals across club and international competitions, revealed that he plans to retire from the sport within the next year or two. Speaking via video link at a Saudi forum on Tuesday, Ronaldo confirmed that the next World Cup will be his swansong.
“Definitely, yes,” he said when asked if 2026 would mark his final appearance at the tournament. “I’ll be 41 years old by then, and I think it will be the right moment.”
Ronaldo, who joined Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr in 2023, expanded on earlier remarks about stepping away from football “soon.” He clarified that his statement referred to a timeframe of “one or two more years” before officially retiring.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner hopes to make his sixth World Cup appearance next year. His closest attempt at lifting the trophy came in 2006, when Portugal were defeated by France in the semifinals.
Portugal are yet to secure qualification for the 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. A win against Ireland on Thursday would confirm their spot.
Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr after his second departure from Manchester United in late 2022 marked the start of a wave of high-profile signings in Saudi Arabia, as the nation continues to invest heavily in sports and entertainment as part of its Vision 2030 diversification plan.
Saudi Arabia was officially confirmed as host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup last December, reinforcing its growing influence in global football.
