Cristian Romero Set for Argentina Trip as Tottenham Face Crucial Relegation Battle Finale

Posted : 22 May 2026

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is expected to be in Argentina rather than at Tottenham’s final Premier League match of the season against Everton, as the club battles to secure its top-flight status.

The 28-year-old defender has already been ruled out due to a knee injury and is also working to regain fitness ahead of the upcoming World Cup. While Spurs need at least a draw to guarantee survival, his absence comes at a critical moment for the team.

Romero recently shared images suggesting he had travelled to Argentina, including a private jet departure and a visit to his former club Belgrano. Reports indicate he will attend Belgrano’s domestic final against River Plate on Sunday, coinciding with Tottenham’s season finale in London.

The Argentine international suffered the injury in April and has since spent time recovering in his home country, with Belgrano reportedly allowing him access to their training facilities during rehabilitation. He has also been offering support to his teammates from afar during Spurs’ recent matches.

Despite being sidelined, Romero’s absence has raised attention due to the timing, with Tottenham still fighting to avoid relegation pressure. The club sit just above the bottom three heading into the final round of fixtures, with West Ham United still able to influence the survival race.

South American football analyst Tim Vickery noted that Romero’s trip aligns with his personal ties to Belgrano and his recovery process, although questions remain over his exact fitness programme ahead of international duty.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has previously praised Romero’s leadership qualities, even amid speculation over his long-term future at the club. The manager is expected to address media questions ahead of the decisive final match.

While injured players often return to their home countries for recovery, the timing of Romero’s trip has drawn attention given Tottenham’s precarious position. The captain’s absence leaves Spurs without one of their key leaders at a crucial stage of the season.
