Cristian Romero Confirms Tottenham Exit Ahead of Atlético Madrid Move

Cristian Romero has confirmed that his five-year spell at Tottenham is coming to an end, with the Argentina international preparing to leave the Premier League club. Tottenham have agreed a package worth around €40 million with Atlético Madrid for the 28-year-old defender, including add-ons and a 15% sell-on clause.

Romero arrived at Spurs in 2021 and went on to make 156 appearances, eventually taking over the captaincy. His time in north London was marked by several disciplinary issues and suspensions, but he also played a crucial role in Tottenham's 2025 Europa League triumph over Manchester United.

The centre-back was named player of the match in that final as Spurs secured their first major trophy in 17 years. Despite the difficulties of his time at the club, Romero reflected positively on his departure, saying he was leaving with pride over what he and his teammates achieved.

In his farewell message, Romero described Tottenham as his home and said his ambition when he arrived was to help the club end its long wait for silverware. He thanked the supporters, teammates and staff while acknowledging that his journey had included both difficult and memorable moments.

Atlético have been long-term admirers of Romero and have now secured an agreement with Tottenham after talks accelerated in recent days. The Argentine is expected to sign a long-term contract with Diego Simeone's side as Atlético strengthen their defence.
