Costa Backs Moffi to Make Major Impact in Bundesliga With Hamburg

Hamburger SV sporting director Claus Costa believes Nigeria international Terem Moffi has the qualities to make a major impact in the Bundesliga after completing his move from OGC Nice.

Hamburg officially announced the signing of the 27-year-old striker on August 24, making him the club’s seventh addition of the summer transfer window. Moffi has joined the German club as they prepare for their return to the Bundesliga.

Costa highlighted Moffi’s physical strength, determination and style of play as qualities that could make him difficult for German defenders to handle. He also pointed to the Nigerian’s ability to attack space behind defensive lines and his presence inside the penalty area.

“Terem is a striker who is difficult to contain due to his physicality, determination and playing style,” Costa said in Hamburg’s official announcement. The sporting director added that Moffi has the quality to play with his back to goal and can provide greater attacking variety for the team.

The signing gives Hamburg another experienced option in attack as the club prepares for its first Bundesliga campaign since returning to Germany’s top flight. Costa said the immediate priority is to integrate Moffi into the squad quickly so the team can begin the new season with confidence and energy.

Moffi arrives in Germany with considerable international and European experience. He began his professional career in Lithuania before moving to Belgium, France and later Portugal, where he spent the second half of last season on loan at FC Porto. Hamburg said he has scored 88 goals and provided 13 assists in 228 competitive appearances across his career.

The Nigerian has also been a full international since 2021. He has made 23 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring six goals and providing two assists. His international experience is another quality Hamburg believe can help him adapt to the demands of German football.

Moffi is expected to wear the number nine shirt at Hamburg. The club said his decision to join was influenced by head coach Merlin Polzin, the atmosphere around the club and its long-term direction.

The striker also made clear what Hamburg can expect from him. Moffi said he enjoys scoring but also wants to work for his teammates and contribute to the collective effort.

Hamburg begin their Bundesliga campaign at home against Borussia Dortmund on August 29. Moffi’s arrival gives Polzin another attacking option ahead of the demanding top-flight season.
