Controversial VAR decision halts Aston Villa's title charge in goalless draw against Everton

Posted : 14 January 2024

Aston Villa's quest for the Premier League title faced a setback as a controversial VAR decision disallowed Alex Moreno's goal in their 0-0 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. The disallowed goal, deemed offside after a lengthy VAR check, denied Villa the chance to move level on points with league leaders Liverpool.

Unai Emery's side now sits in third place, two points behind Liverpool, having won only one of their last four league matches. Despite Villa's strong start to the season, the disallowed goal raises concerns about the team's title aspirations.

The contentious decision came after Moreno's powerful strike from the edge of the area following a short corner was ruled out for a tight offside against Leon Bailey. The four-minute VAR check fueled frustration among Villa players and fans, as they believed the goal should have stood.

The perceived injustice seemed to motivate Villa, who subsequently created chances to take the lead, with Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey threatening Everton's defense. However, Villa's attacking efforts were thwarted, leaving them with only a point from the match.

On the other hand, Everton, precariously positioned just above the relegation zone, extended their winless streak in the league to four games. Sean Dyche's team, facing a 10-point deduction earlier in the season for financial breaches, remains in a relegation battle.

Despite the disappointment of not securing a win, both teams experienced moments of attacking intent, with chances for Watkins, Bailey, and efforts from Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure. The draw leaves Everton one point clear of the relegation zone and Villa contemplating missed opportunities in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
