Contractor Assures Upgraded Warri City Stadium Will Meet FIFA Standards By September

Posted : 09 June 2026

The ongoing reconstruction of the Warri City Stadium in Delta State is on track for completion by September 2026. Olanrewaju Adeleke, the Managing Director of Peculiar Consults, gave this assurance following a recent facility overview. The infrastructure project aims to elevate the complex to a world-class arena. Adeleke noted that the quality of the venue will compel African nations to host their continental matches there.

The comprehensive upgrade will expand the matchday spectator capacity from 17,000 to 20,000 seats. It will feature a professional hybrid grass surface alongside an advanced underground drainage system built to strict FIFA specifications. To prevent previous waterlogging issues, the playing pitch has been engineered with three separate underlying concrete layers. Adeleke explained that recent heavy rainfall in Warri has left no standing water on the surface.

Beyond the main football field, the sports complex will house an array of modern athletic facilities. These additions include a nine-lane World Athletics standard tartan track, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a brand new indoor sports hall. The facility will also feature dedicated volleyball, handball, and tennis courts, plus two external practice pitches. Advanced electronic surveillance and security monitoring systems will also be installed across the entire perimeter.

The project has faced previous administrative scrutiny regarding its delivery timelines. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori previously expressed dissatisfaction over delays during an April inspection tour with Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau. The contract originally targeted a December 2025 completion date. While the governor rejected temporary external wall cladding materials, he explicitly commended the technical quality of the playing turf.

Peculiar Consults is currently handling multiple sports infrastructure contracts across Southern Nigeria. The firm is overseeing the re-grassing of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos and two separate arena projects in Bayelsa State. The company is also in line to upgrade the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. Adeleke stated that completing these projects will bring Nigerian sports infrastructure closer to continental standards set by South Africa.
