Conte’s Napoli Near Second Scudetto in Three Years

Posted : 01 May 2025

Napoli are rapidly approaching a second Serie A title in three seasons as they prepare to face Lecce on Saturday, one of four matches against relatively easy opponents that could seal an unexpected league crown. Head coach Antonio Conte, who once claimed that Napoli’s status as Inter Milan’s closest challengers for the Scudetto was "unthinkable" at the season's start, has dramatically transformed a team still recovering from a historically poor title defense into league leaders, three points clear with less than a month remaining.

At the outset of the season, few could have foreseen Napoli mounting a serious title challenge, especially after a demoralizing 3-0 loss to Verona that saw them "melt like snow in the sun," as Conte put it. However, thanks to timely acquisitions such as Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay during the summer window, Conte has forged a new, resilient squad rising from the remnants of the team that ended a three-decade title drought two years ago.

Having already ensured a top-four finish, Napoli now have their sights set on the Scudetto, with Conte eyeing his fifth league title as a coach—following triumphs with Juventus and Inter in 2021. After a 2-0 victory over Torino, with McTominay scoring twice, Conte emphasized the hard work that has led to this point, stating, "It's all in our hands. We worked really hard and are seeing the fruits of that labour... Seeing where we started from, that's remarkable."

Despite the remarkable progress, Conte has been clear that significant investment in the squad is essential for his continued success at Napoli. He also appreciates the advantage of having no European commitments this season, unlike rivals such as Inter, who are struggling with a grueling campaign that saw them draw 3-3 with Barcelona and potentially lose captain Lautaro Martinez to injury. Meanwhile, the contest for the remaining Champions League spots is fiercely competitive, with only six points separating the teams in third and eighth positions.
