Comoros Coach Targets Improvement Ahead of Super Falcons Olympic Qualifier Rematch

Posted : 12 October 2026

Comoros women's national team head coach Youssef Abdallah has acknowledged the strength of Nigeria's Super Falcons while stressing that his team's priority is to gain experience and improve during the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Comoros suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the first leg of their second-round qualifying tie at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Friday, October 9. Second-half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu gave the nine-time African champions a valuable advantage ahead of the return fixture.

Despite the setback, Abdallah said his players understood the challenge of facing one of Africa's most successful women's national teams. He maintained that the team's participation in the competition was also an opportunity to develop and gain valuable international experience.

“We knew our opponent and understood that we were facing a very, very strong team,” Abdallah said.

“As I said at the beginning, during the first press conference, we came here primarily to grow and improve.”

The coach's comments reflect Comoros' broader efforts to strengthen its position in women's football. Competing against established teams such as Nigeria offers the island nation an opportunity to assess its weaknesses and improve its performance at international level.

Comoros entered the second round after an emphatic 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan in the opening round. That result demonstrated the team's attacking potential, although the encounter against Nigeria presented a considerably tougher challenge.

The defeat leaves Comoros needing to overturn a two-goal deficit to keep its Olympic qualification hopes alive. Abdallah's players must improve their defensive organisation while making better use of scoring opportunities if they are to trouble the Nigerian side.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will seek to protect its advantage and secure passage to the third round. The Super Falcons have considerable experience in African women's football and will aim to use that pedigree to manage the tie effectively.

The return fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. The aggregate winner will advance to the third round, where Morocco awaits.

For Comoros, the encounter offers another opportunity to measure its progress against elite African opposition. Nigeria will approach the match with qualification as its immediate objective, while Abdallah's team will hope to produce a stronger performance and challenge the hosts.
