Cole Palmer Withdraws From England Squad With Muscle Injury

Posted : 21 September 2026

Cole Palmer has withdrawn from England’s squad ahead of the Three Lions’ upcoming Nations League fixtures after suffering a minor muscle injury. The Chelsea forward had been recalled by Thomas Tuchel after missing England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Palmer had been selected for England’s extended international schedule, which begins against Spain at Wembley on September 26. England will then face the Czech Republic away, travel to Croatia and finish the series with another home match against the Czech Republic on October 6.

The 24-year-old had started the season strongly for Chelsea, scoring four goals and providing two assists in seven appearances. He played the full 90 minutes during Chelsea’s 3-0 Premier League defeat by Brentford on Friday.

Palmer’s latest setback comes after an injury-disrupted 2025-26 campaign in which he dealt with a recurring groin problem. He had previously indicated that he felt physically stronger heading into the new season after working to address his fitness issues.

His withdrawal is a setback for Tuchel, who had brought Palmer back into the England setup following his omission from the World Cup squad. The England manager had challenged the Chelsea attacker to demonstrate his performances and establish his place in the team.

Palmer last represented England in March, when the Three Lions suffered a 1-0 friendly defeat against Japan. He will now miss the four Nations League matches scheduled during the extended international break.

Palmer is not the only England player facing fitness concerns, with Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo also doubts after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham. Tino Livramento is another player whose availability is being assessed.
