Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is close to returning to action but will be unavailable for the Champions League clash with Barcelona and the Premier League top-of-the-table showdown against Arsenal, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed on Monday.
Palmer had been recovering from a groin injury sustained in August and made an impressive return with goals against Brentford and Bayern Munich. However, a domestic accident, in which the 23-year-old England international stubbed his toe on a door, resulted in a fracture that has delayed his comeback.
“Cole is wearing a protective boot,” Maresca told reporters. “We don’t know exactly when he will return, but it will be soon. He’s already on the pitch and touching the ball, and the feeling for him is positive. I don’t think he will be available for these two games, but he’s doing well.”
Chelsea currently sit six points behind leaders Arsenal, having collected 23 points from 12 matches. The sides face each other in a London derby at Stamford Bridge this Sunday, but Maresca emphasized the importance of taking one game at a time, with the Champions League visit from Barcelona first.
Barca, second in LaLiga, bring plenty of firepower, led by Robert Lewandowski, who has scored eight goals this season. Teenager Lamine Yamal, second in LaLiga assists with six, also poses a significant threat. “Lewandowski is a fantastic player who has proven his ability to score goals throughout his career. We will defend as a team and stay aggressive,” said Maresca. “But Barcelona have many other dangerous players, including Yamal, Frenkie de Jong, and Fermin Lopez.”
