Cody Gakpo Scores Twice as Netherlands Crush Malta; Scotland Come From Behind to Beat Greece

Posted : 10 October 2025

The Netherlands strengthened their position in World Cup qualifying Group G with a convincing 4-0 victory over Malta on Thursday. Cody Gakpo converted two penalties, while Tijjani Reijnders and Memphis Depay also found the net to secure the dominant away win.

Gakpo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute and added a second four minutes into the second half before assisting Reijnders for the third goal in the 57th minute. Depay wrapped up the scoring with a stoppage-time header, giving the Dutch a comfortable victory and a three-point lead over second-placed Poland.

The result moved the Netherlands to 13 points from five matches, with Finland in third on 10 points from six games. The Dutch now have a chance to consolidate their top spot in Sunday’s home game against Finland in Amsterdam, edging closer to securing World Cup qualification.

Elsewhere, Scotland staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Greece 3-1 in their Group C qualifier. Greece initially took the lead through Kostas Tsimikas in the 62nd minute, but Ryan Christie equalized just two minutes later following a VAR review.

Lewis Ferguson scored his first international goal in the 80th minute, and Lyndon Dykes sealed the win in stoppage time after a goalkeeping error by Konstantinos Tzolakis. The victory keeps Scotland level on seven points with group leaders Denmark and moves them closer to their first World Cup appearance since 1998.

Manager Steve Clarke marked his 71st game in charge, equaling the record for most games managed for Scotland, with an opportunity to surpass it against Belarus on Sunday. Meanwhile, Greece remain on three points and face a crucial away clash against Denmark, with their early exit from the tournament looming if they fail to secure a positive result.
