Club Brugge Enter Race for Rangers Star Fernandez as European Giants Queue Up

Posted : 20 March 2026

Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen had scouts watching Fernandez earlier this season, with both Bundesliga clubs clearly impressed by what they saw. Bayern Munich, along with clubs from Italy's Serie A, have also registered an interest, while Rangers blocked any mid-season move to keep him for the title run-in. Now, Belgian giants Club Brugge have formally entered the conversation.

According to Voetbal Primeur, Club Brugge are seriously considering a summer move for the 24-year-old defender. The Belgian side, well-known for their sharp scouting operation, were reportedly impressed after coming up against Fernandez in a pre-season clash at Ibrox. Reports also suggest that Fernandez has a personal preference for a move to Germany, which could complicate the chances of Brugge and Premier League clubs alike.

Fernandez has scored five goals in 22 appearances for Rangers this season; his aerial threat from set-pieces has been a defining feature of his game. Much of that improvement has been credited to Rangers' new set-piece specialist Scott Fry, whose delivery has unlocked Fernandez's heading ability in a way that has caught the eye of European scouts.

Arsenal and Chelsea have both been monitoring the defender since February, with West Ham also entering the frame last week via a report from journalist Alan Nixon. Rangers had already rejected a combined £23 million worth of bids during the January window, treating Fernandez as non-negotiable alongside Djeidi Gassama and Youssef Chermiti.

Any deal in the summer will not come cheap. Peterborough's Director of Football Barry Fry has publicly predicted that Fernandez will fetch between £30 million and £40 million if Rangers decide to sell. Peterborough are also entitled to a substantial sell-on fee from any future transfer, having sold him to Rangers for £3.5 million last summer.

Rangers manager Danny Rohl has made clear that he cannot entertain any thoughts of a Fernandez exit at this stage; the sole focus at Ibrox right now is the Scottish Premiership title race. Rangers currently sit three points behind league leaders Hearts, and Rohl views Fernandez as central to any push for silverware between now and May.

In the meantime, Fernandez has added international recognition to his growing profile after earning his first Super Eagles call-up for Nigeria's March friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
