Clinical Rangers seize NPFL top spot with composed win over El Kanemi

Posted : 23 March 2026

Seven-time Nigerian champions, Rangers International FC, delivered a composed and efficient performance to climb to the top of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table, following a 2-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

Rather than a one-sided blitz, this encounter was defined by Rangers’ patience, structure, and ability to strike at decisive moments.

Despite dominating possession and territory from kickoff, the Flying Antelopes were initially frustrated by their own profligacy in front of goal.

El Kanemi, disciplined in their defensive shape, managed to contain the early waves of pressure, forcing Rangers into hurried finishes and missed opportunities. However, the resistance eventually gave way five minutes before halftime.

Daniel Itodo broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, reacting quickest in a crowded penalty area to nod home from close range, giving the hosts a deserved lead heading into the break.

In the second half, Rangers showed greater control and maturity, managing the tempo while limiting El Kanemi’s attacking ambitions.

The visitors attempted to push forward in search of an equaliser but struggled to break through a well-organized defensive line.

The game was effectively put beyond doubt in the 79th minute when experienced forward Godwin Obaje calmly slotted home, capping off a well-worked move and underlining Rangers’ superiority on the day.

While El Kanemi showed flashes of intent late on, they were unable to penetrate a resolute Rangers backline, as the hosts comfortably saw out the contest.

Speaking after the match, El Kanemi head coach Kabiru Dogo acknowledged the quality of the opposition, admitting his side fell short.

“We started well, but they took control. The second goal made it difficult for us to recover. Rangers deserved the win.”

Rangers’ Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, praised his team’s discipline and execution, noting their respect for a tough opponent.

“El Kanemi are well-coached and organized, but my players stayed focused and delivered what we planned. It’s a well-earned victory.”

The result lifts Rangers to 53 points, enough to temporarily displace Rivers United at the summit, adding fresh intrigue to the NPFL title race as the season approaches its decisive stretch.

In conclusion, Rangers International FC demonstrated the clinical edge and defensive discipline necessary to secure the top spot in the league standings. By overcoming a resilient El Kanemi side, the Flying Antelopes have positioned themselves as the team to beat in the final stages of the campaign. This crucial victory shifts the pressure onto their title rivals as the race for the NPFL crown enters its most intense phase.
