Clinical Bendel Insurance Outclass Enyimba in Benin Showdown

Posted : 08 February 2026

Bendel Insurance delivered a composed and efficient performance to secure a 2–0 victory over Enyimba International in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 25 clash at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, on Saturday.

In a contest that tested discipline and game management, the Benin Arsenal showed greater sharpness in key moments, punishing Enyimba’s errors to claim all three points.

The hosts went ahead in the 27th minute when Alex Oweillayefa reacted quickest to a loose ball from a deflected free kick, slotting home to hand Insurance a deserved first-half advantage.

Despite enjoying more of the ball after the restart, Enyimba struggled to convert possession into meaningful opportunities. Their urgency in the second half lacked the cutting edge needed to break through a well-drilled Insurance defence.

With the People’s Elephant pushing forward in search of parity, Insurance remained patient and disciplined. Their resilience paid off in the 77th minute when Efe Ubioma capitalised on a defensive lapse to calmly extend the lead and put the result beyond doubt.

Enyimba head coach Deji Ayeni acknowledged that his team’s defensive shortcomings proved decisive, even as he commended their improved second-half display.

“The players showed good character after the break and tried to get back into the game, but we were punished for our mistakes at the back,” Ayeni admitted after the match.

He added that while his side dominated possession for large spells, inefficiency in front of goal ultimately cost them.

“We had control for most parts of the second half, but football is about taking your chances. Insurance did that better today. We will go back and correct the areas where we fell short.”

The victory further strengthens Bendel Insurance’s reputation as a formidable side at home, while Enyimba must now regroup ahead of their return to Aba, where they face Ikorodu City in their next league outing.
