Clearlake Capital Takes Full Control of Chelsea as Boehly

Clearlake Capital has taken full control of Chelsea after acquiring the ownership stakes held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, bringing an end to the club’s shared ownership structure established in 2022.

Clearlake, led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, had previously held a 61.5% stake in Chelsea. Boehly, Walter and Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss each held 12.8%. Wyss will remain an important stakeholder in the ownership group, according to the club.

The transaction also brings an end to Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman, a position he had held since the consortium completed its takeover of the club in 2022. Boehly said it had been an honour to serve as chairman and expressed confidence in Chelsea’s future under Clearlake’s leadership.

Clearlake said it intends to maintain its existing direction while continuing investment in Chelsea’s infrastructure, sporting operations and player development. The club confirmed that the ownership change will not result in changes to its day-to-day operations, leadership or overall strategy.

Chelsea’s ownership group has overseen major investment in the men’s and women’s teams, academy, training facilities and other areas since the 2022 takeover. The club’s highest Premier League finish during that period was fourth in the 2024-25 season, when Chelsea also won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

The club has also undergone significant squad turnover since the takeover, with the ownership group initially focusing heavily on recruiting younger players on long-term contracts. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and appointed Xabi Alonso as head coach during the summer.

The ownership transition comes amid continuing discussions over Chelsea’s long-term stadium plans, including the potential redevelopment of Stamford Bridge or a move to a new ground. Clearlake now has control over the club as those projects remain part of its longer-term agenda.

Boehly and Walter have also ended their interests in Chelsea’s partner club Strasbourg as part of the ownership changes. The latest transaction represents a major shift from the consortium that took control of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
