City FC of Abuja recorded a narrow 1–0 victory over Conference C leaders, Doma United FC, in their Nigeria National League (NNL) Matchday 5 encounter played at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch, Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium.
Despite the contrasting positions on the Conference C table—Doma United topping the league and City FC sitting seventh—the match lived up to expectations as a fiercely contested encounter. Both sides displayed disciplined performances in the first half, neutralising each other with organised defending and purposeful attacking play.
City FC’s midfield trio of Justin Dominic, Sunday Oliseh, and James Isah provided stability, while Prince Friday, Jacob Daniel, and Isek Simon maintained the tempo in attack. Nevertheless, neither team was able to break the deadlock by halftime.
After the restart, City FC increased the intensity, aided by Shuaib Akinwande and Franklin Ozor, whose energy added bite to the forward play. Adeyemi Mogbademu also caused constant problems for the Doma United backline with sustained pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 57th minute when Shuaib Akinwande scored from a rebound, calmly tapping the ball past the Doma United goalkeeper to give the hosts the lead. Doma United fought back, but City FC held firm to secure all three points.
Speaking after the match, City FC captain Justin Dominic praised his teammates for their resilience and determination, describing the encounter as highly competitive. “It was a very good and intensive game, but we were able to suppress our opponents. We have now gotten a mid-season break from the NNL and hope to come back stronger. Despite our slow start, I still believe we can push towards the top, regardless of the pressure or circumstances,” he said. He also credited the technical crew and supporters for their continued backing.
With the victory, City FC climb to sixth on the NNL table with eight points, while Doma United remain in first place with 16 points. The two sides will meet again in Matchday 8 on January 31, 2026.
