Samuel Chukwueze made a positive start to life under new AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim after impressing during the club's opening pre-season training session at Milanello on Monday.
The Super Eagles winger returned to the Italian club following the end of his loan spell at Premier League side Fulham. After completing routine medical and fitness assessments, Chukwueze joined his teammates for the first training session of the new campaign, which lasted just over an hour.
Amorim used the opening session to introduce his tactical ideas, with Milan operating in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation during a series of small-sided matches. Chukwueze was deployed primarily as a wing-back, featuring on both the right and left flanks rather than in an advanced attacking role.
The tactical experiment highlighted the Nigerian's versatility, with the 26-year-old adapting well to the demands of the position. His pace, dribbling ability and willingness to attack from wide areas reportedly caught the attention of the coaching staff during the session.
Speculation over Chukwueze's future had intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting he could leave Milan during the summer transfer window. However, Amorim moved quickly to dismiss those rumours, making it clear that the Nigerian remains part of his plans for the upcoming season.
"Chukwueze will stay with us," Amorim said. "We need players capable of one-on-one situations, and he and Alexis Saelemaekers can also play on either flank. It doesn't matter where they come from. If they train well and have the right qualities, we'll find a place for them."
The Portuguese coach also explained that Milan intend to evaluate the current squad before making major additions in the transfer market.
"Before considering external options, we look internally. Then, we'll make decisions, keeping the budget in mind. We want to do things properly and select the right players," Amorim added.
The public backing is a significant boost for Chukwueze after an inconsistent spell since arriving at San Siro. Injuries and competition for places limited his impact, while his loan move to Fulham offered him valuable playing time before returning to Milan this summer.
With Amorim expected to rely heavily on energetic wide players capable of contributing in both attack and defence, Chukwueze now has an opportunity to revive his Milan career. A strong pre-season could strengthen his chances of earning regular minutes as the Rossoneri prepare for the new Serie A campaign.
For the Super Eagles star, the early signs are encouraging. Amorim's confidence and willingness to utilise his versatility could provide the fresh start Chukwueze needs to re-establish himself at one of Italy's biggest clubs.
