Christy Ucheibe Ends Six-Year Benfica Stay Ahead of New Challenge

Posted : 26 June 2026

Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe will leave Portuguese champions Benfica at the end of June after the club confirmed that her contract will expire on June 30, bringing an end to a highly successful six-year spell.

Benfica announced the departure in an official statement, thanking the Nigerian international for her outstanding contribution and wishing her success as she prepares for the next chapter of her professional career.

Ucheibe joined Benfica in February 2020 at the age of 19 after moving from Nigeria to Portugal. Although her arrival coincided with the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, she quickly established herself as one of the club's most dependable players and became a key figure in one of the most successful periods in Benfica Women's history.

During her time with the Portuguese giants, the 25-year-old made 179 appearances and scored 11 goals. Her consistency, defensive discipline and leadership in midfield earned her the trust of successive coaching staffs and made her a fan favourite.

The Nigerian international enjoyed remarkable success with Benfica, helping the club win six Portuguese league titles. She also lifted two Portuguese Cups, five League Cups and two Portuguese Super Cups, playing an important role in the team's domestic dominance.

Beyond her achievements on the pitch, Benfica praised Ucheibe for her professionalism, dedication and positive influence within the squad. The club highlighted her commitment to daily training and her strong connection with teammates and supporters throughout her stay.

Her impressive club performances also strengthened her position with Nigeria's senior women's national team. Ucheibe became a regular starter for the Super Falcons and played an important role in the team's triumph at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, further establishing herself as one of Nigeria's leading midfielders.

With her contract coming to an end, Ucheibe is expected to attract interest from clubs across Europe. Her experience in continental competitions, combined with her proven record of winning trophies, makes her an attractive option for teams seeking an experienced defensive midfielder.

As she prepares to begin a new chapter, Ucheibe departs Benfica having left a lasting legacy. Her six years at the club were marked by consistent performances, major silverware and personal growth, making her one of the most successful Nigerian players to feature in Portuguese women's football.
