Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu has expressed a desire to mould his side into a team that asserts dominance over its opponents as they prepare to face Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in their second Club World Cup group match on Saturday.
The Italian giants were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Monterrey of Mexico in their opening Group E clash on Tuesday, and Chivu is eager for his players to rebound with a more commanding display. The match will be played in Seattle as part of FIFA’s expanded tournament format.
Having recently succeeded Simone Inzaghi—who left the club following Inter’s UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain—Chivu is now laying the groundwork for a more assertive style of play.
The former Inter and Romania defender outlined his vision of a team that controls matches through possession, tactical awareness, and aggressive tempo setting. He emphasized the importance of showing character and technical quality throughout every phase of the game.
“I think every coach would love a team that dominates,” Chivu stated. “You need to show your technical ability, your personality, and your ability to dictate the pace of the match. Whether it’s through ball movement or direct play, the goal is to have the game under control and to dictate proceedings from start to finish.”
While Chivu acknowledged that building such a team will take time, he remains optimistic about seeing early signs of that vision come to life against Urawa. “That’s what we’d like to do, maybe even starting tomorrow,” he added. “But we also understand it’s a process, and we’ll need time to work more deeply on our tactical identity.” Inter will be aiming for a win to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive after a shaky tournament start.
