Chidera Ejuke Dubbed ‘Jay-Jay’ After Masterclass in Sevilla Win Over Real Sociedad

Posted : 07 May 2026

Super Eagles forward Chidera Ejuke has received high praise from the Spanish media following a standout performance for Sevilla on Monday night. Spanish sports daily AS bestowed the nickname ‘Jay-Jay Ejuke’ upon the winger after he helped his side secure a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad. The moniker references Nigerian football icon Austin 'Jay-Jay' Okocha, known for his extraordinary dribbling and creative flair.

Ejuke was a surprise inclusion in the starting lineup at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. He repaid the faith of manager Luis Garcia Plaza by delivering a performance defined by high work rate and technical skill. The Nigerian international was instrumental in both attacking and defensive phases throughout the contest. His ability to navigate tight spaces consistently unsettled the Real Sociedad backline.

Statistically, the 28-year-old was one of the most productive players on the pitch. Offensively, he completed five successful dribbles and registered three shots on goal. He also created one major scoring opportunity for his teammates. Defensively, he recorded 11 recoveries and won eight ground duels before being substituted late in stoppage time.

The match itself was decided early in the second half by veteran striker Alexis Sánchez. Sánchez came off the bench to fire home the winner in the 50th minute after receiving a pass from Neal Maupay. This victory proved crucial for Sevilla as it moved them out of the La Liga relegation zone. They now sit in 17th place with 37 points, three points clear of the drop zone with four matches remaining.

Coach Luis Garcia Plaza highlighted Ejuke’s unpredictability as a key factor in his tactical plan. He noted that the winger’s dribbling ability forced defenders out of position, creating space for others. This performance is expected to boost Ejuke’s confidence following a season where he has struggled for consistent starts. Sevilla will now look to carry this momentum into their next fixture against Espanyol on Saturday.
