Chelsea Target Danny Welbeck as Xabi Alonso Seeks Experience in Attack

Posted : 27 July 2026

Chelsea have opened discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion over a potential move for veteran striker Danny Welbeck as new manager Xabi Alonso looks to add proven Premier League experience to his squad. The 35-year-old is understood to be interested in a switch to Stamford Bridge, and there is growing optimism that an agreement can be reached.

The move signals a shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy after co-owner Behdad Eghbali acknowledged earlier this year that the club's heavy emphasis on recruiting young players needed to be adjusted. Welbeck, who enjoyed the most prolific league season of his career with 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last term, is viewed as a player capable of providing leadership and valuable experience to a young squad.

Since arriving from Watford in 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals in 201 appearances for Brighton. He also signed a one-year contract extension in March, keeping him at the Amex Stadium until the end of the 2026-27 season. Brighton have declined to comment on Chelsea's reported interest.

Chelsea's pursuit of Welbeck comes despite already having several attacking options. Joao Pedro is regarded as the club's first-choice striker, while Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Emmanuel Emegha and Marc Guiu are also under contract. However, several of those forwards face uncertain futures before the transfer window closes.

Guiu is reportedly available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing the young striker at around £25 million. Jackson, who has returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is open to leaving amid interest from Aston Villa, while Delap is increasingly expected to move on after struggling to establish himself under Alonso. Questions also remain over Emegha's future despite his recent arrival from Strasbourg.

Chelsea have already strengthened several areas of the squad this summer by signing Morgan Rogers for a club-record £117 million, full-back Marco Palestra, and are closing in on a deal for centre-back Maxence Lacroix. The pursuit of Welbeck reflects Alonso's desire to balance youthful talent with experienced players as he reshapes the squad for the new season.
