Chelsea Sign Veteran Striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton

Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the England international agreeing to a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Neither Chelsea nor Brighton disclosed the transfer fee for the deal.

The 35-year-old arrives after enjoying the most prolific Premier League season of his career, scoring 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton. Among English players, only three found the net more often in the league last season.

Welbeck becomes Chelsea's third signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta. His signing represents a notable shift in Chelsea's recent recruitment strategy, which has largely focused on acquiring younger talent since the club's ownership change in 2022.

Speaking after completing the move, Welbeck expressed his excitement about joining the Blues and said the opportunity was one he could not turn down.

"When you hear that Chelsea are interested in signing you, it fills you with immense pride," Welbeck said.

"I already know some of the players, and I've had excellent conversations with the manager, which helped me feel an immediate connection. I still have the hunger to compete and will give everything to make the club and the supporters proud."

Welbeck's arrival is also expected to increase competition for places in Chelsea's attack. João Pedro is currently regarded as the club's first-choice striker, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson also provide attacking options.

The forward began his professional career at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in a £16 million transfer in 2014. After five seasons in north London, he spent a year with Watford before moving to Brighton in 2020, where he became a key figure in the club's attack.

At international level, Welbeck has scored 16 goals in 42 appearances for England. His most recent international cap came in 2018, and he was not included in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
