Chelsea Rejects Permanent Sancho Deal, Eyes Mike Maignan Transfer

Posted : 03 June 2025

Chelsea has chosen not to activate the permanent transfer clause in Jadon Sancho’s loan agreement, deciding instead to pay a £5 million penalty to return the winger to Manchester United. Sancho, who joined the Blues last summer following a fallout with former United manager Erik ten Hag, failed to convince Chelsea to extend his stay despite contributing five goals and 10 assists in 42 matches, including a goal in the Conference League final.

Although Chelsea were obligated to buy him for £25 million after finishing above 14th in the Premier League, the club and the player could not agree on personal terms, particularly a pay cut from his current £300,000-a-week deal.

Meanwhile, Chelsea has initiated talks with AC Milan regarding a potential transfer for France international goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The 29-year-old, who has been Milan's first-choice keeper since joining from Lille in 2021, is reportedly open to a move to Stamford Bridge.

Maignan has also held the number one spot for France since Hugo Lloris retired from international duty in 2023, making him a highly valued target for the Blues as they seek a long-term solution in goal.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has remained unstable since the high-profile signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018. Though the club later brought in Edouard Mendy and more recently Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, and Filip Jorgensen, none have firmly secured the starting role. Petrovic was loaned to Strasbourg last season, while Sanchez and Jorgensen shared playing time. With Maignan’s proven quality and availability, Chelsea sees him as a possible answer to their ongoing struggles between the posts.
