Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia will be sidelined for at least a month after sustaining a quadriceps injury.
The 21-year-old picked up the problem just four minutes into Chelsea’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Qarabag last week, marking only his fourth start since returning from a previous injury at the Club World Cup.
Lavia’s time at Stamford Bridge has been significantly affected by fitness issues. Since moving from Southampton in a £53 million transfer in 2023, he has struggled with multiple injuries, including hamstring and thigh problems. Over two and a half seasons, Lavia has featured in 29 matches but missed 88, and he has yet to play a full 90 minutes for the club.
To protect his fitness, Chelsea have limited Lavia’s playing time, following a similar approach previously used with captain Reece James.
The midfielder is expected to miss upcoming Premier League and Champions League fixtures against Burnley, Barcelona, Arsenal, Leeds, Bournemouth, and Atalanta.
Despite these setbacks, Chelsea sit third in the Premier League, coming off a 3-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.
