Chelsea, Manchester City lead Premier League agent fee spending with combined £135 million outlay

Posted : 12 April 2024

Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City emerged as the top spenders in agent fees, shelling out over £75 million and £60 million, respectively, in the 12-month period leading up to February 2024. These figures, disclosed by the Football Association, encapsulate expenditures across the Premier League, EFL, and National League, potentially encompassing deals initiated before February 2023.

The staggering sums disbursed by Chelsea and Manchester City notably outstripped those of their Premier League counterparts, with Manchester United ranking third at £34 million, less than half of Chelsea's total. Chelsea's lavish spending spree under new ownership, spearheaded by transactions like Moises Caicedo's potential British record signing, has propelled their cumulative transfer and loan fees beyond the £1 billion mark.

Beyond the top spenders, other Premier League clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, and Aston Villa also allocated substantial amounts exceeding £20 million towards agent fees. Meanwhile, relegated top-flight clubs from the previous season, namely Leeds United, Leicester City, and Southampton, emerged as the highest spenders among current Championship contenders, contrasting sharply with Luton Town's modest £2 million payout.

In the lower tiers, League One witnessed a relatively lower total expenditure of £5.1 million, with Derby County leading the pack. In League Two, Wrexham, owned by Hollywood luminaries Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, took the helm in agent fee spending, underscoring the diverse financial landscape across English football's spectrum.
