Chelsea faces Ajax in women's Champions League quarter-finals as only British team left

Posted : 06 February 2024

Chelsea has been drawn against Dutch side Ajax in the quarter-finals of the Women's Champions League, marking the only British team remaining in the competition. The first leg is scheduled for March 19/20 in Amsterdam, with the return leg in London on March 26/27.

If successful against Ajax, Chelsea would face the winner of the tie between holders Barcelona and Norwegian side Brann in the semi-finals.

The other quarter-final matchups feature Lyon against Benfica and Paris St-Germain against Hacken. Should Chelsea progress to the final in Bilbao on May 25, they would be designated as the home team against opponents like Benfica, Lyon, Hacken, or Paris St-Germain.

Chelsea secured their spot in the quarter-finals by topping Group D, remaining unbeaten in the competition with four wins and two draws in the group stage.

Manager Emma Hayes, in her final season with Chelsea before moving to lead the United States national side, aims to secure silverware. In the previous season, Chelsea reached the last-four stage before being eliminated by Barcelona, a potential opponent again in this season's semi-finals.

Chelsea's most notable Women's Champions League performance came in the 2020-21 season when they reached the final but lost 4-0 to Barcelona in Gothenburg.
