Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria after making significant progress in negotiations with the Spanish club.
The Blues have already agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old defender and are now working to finalise a transfer worth around £16.3 million, with additional performance-related bonuses expected to be included in the deal.
Both clubs are increasingly confident that an agreement will be reached soon.
Talks between Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano have been ongoing since late June. An opening offer of approximately £15 million was rejected, with negotiations becoming increasingly difficult as the La Liga side reportedly raised their asking price during discussions.
At one stage, Rayo were believed to be demanding the player's full £42.8 million release clause before both sides moved closer to a compromise.
Chavarria has played a central role in Chelsea's recruitment plans under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The Spanish manager is eager to strengthen the left side of his defence after Marc Cucurella's departure to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Chavarria, who reportedly informed Rayo Vallecano of his desire to join Chelsea, is expected to provide the experience and tactical flexibility Alonso wants as he implements the wing-back system that brought him major success during his managerial career.
The Spaniard's arrival would complement the signing of right-back Marco Palestra, giving Chelsea greater balance on both flanks. Alonso views dynamic wing-backs as a key component of his tactical setup, and Chavarria's ability to contribute defensively while supporting attacks makes him an ideal fit for the system.
Chelsea's busy transfer window has already seen several experienced players arrive at Stamford Bridge. Veteran striker Danny Welbeck and midfielder Jordan Henderson have added leadership to the squad, while Morgan Rogers joined in a club-record deal from Aston Villa.
Defender Maxence Lacroix has also strengthened the backline, and midfielder Valentin Barco is expected to complete his move from Strasbourg in the coming days.
With several major signings secured, Chelsea are expected to shift their attention towards balancing the squad through player departures.
Defender Trevoh Chalobah is close to joining Italian side Como 1907 in a deal worth around £31 million, with further exits anticipated before the transfer window closes.
