Chelsea Close In on Danny Welbeck to Add Experience to Xabi Alonso's Squad

Chelsea are putting the finishing touches on a deal to sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck, with the experienced forward having been granted permission to undergo a medical before completing his move to Stamford Bridge. The 35-year-old is expected to join the Blues on a two-year contract and link up with the squad during their pre-season tour in Hong Kong.

The move represents a shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who is keen to add proven Premier League experience to one of the youngest squads in the top flight. After the club finished 10th last season without qualifying for European competition, Chelsea's hierarchy acknowledged the need to balance youth with experienced leadership.

Chelsea have already strengthened several areas of the squad this summer, signing Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra and defender Maxence Lacroix, while discussions continue over a possible move for veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson. Alonso is believed to value players with leadership qualities as he looks to rebuild the club into Premier League title contenders.

Welbeck brings a wealth of top-flight experience after spells with Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton. Since joining Brighton in 2021, he has become the club's all-time leading Premier League scorer and enjoyed one of the most productive campaigns of his career last season, making him an attractive option despite his age.

His arrival is also expected to reshape Chelsea's attacking options. João Pedro is likely to remain the club's first-choice striker, while Welbeck will provide experienced support and competition. The increased depth could lead to departures for several forwards, with Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu among those linked with loan or permanent moves before the transfer window closes.

Chelsea view Welbeck's signing as more than just an addition on the pitch. His experience, professionalism and leadership are expected to play an important role in guiding the club's younger players as Alonso begins a new era at Stamford Bridge.
