Chelsea Beat Manchester United as Premier League Weekend Delivers Major Clashes

Posted : 31 October 2026

Chelsea claimed a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, to open a busy weekend of football across Europe. The result increased the pressure on United manager Michael Carrick, whose team struggled to maintain their early momentum.

Manchester United started brightly and created several opportunities in the first half. However, both sides had goals ruled out for offside, leaving the contest goalless at the break.

Chelsea took the lead five minutes into the second half. Morgan Rogers capitalised on a turnover in possession, drove past the United defence and chipped goalkeeper Senne Lammens to put the hosts ahead.

United's task became more difficult when Lisandro Martínez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for an off-the-ball incident involving Wesley Fofana. The defender's dismissal also resulted in a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute to make it 2-0.

Chelsea continued to threaten after taking control of the match. Estêvão had another effort ruled out for offside, while United came close to scoring late on when Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders also made an important save to preserve the clean sheet.

The victory moved Chelsea provisionally into fourth place with 16 points. Manchester United's difficult run continued, with the defeat extending their winless sequence to nine matches across all competitions. United also dropped to 16th in the league standings, increasing scrutiny on Carrick's position.

Attention then turned to the remaining Premier League fixtures. Manchester City welcomed Brighton & Hove Albion to the Etihad Stadium in a meeting between two sides enjoying strong league campaigns. The teams had also faced each other in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week.

Tottenham Hotspur were scheduled to host Crystal Palace in a London derby at 5:30 p.m. GMT. Aston Villa were set to complete the day's Premier League programme against Fulham at Villa Park, with kick-off scheduled for 8 p.m. GMT.

Other Saturday fixtures included Bournemouth against Leeds United, Brentford versus Nottingham Forest, Coventry City against Sunderland, and Hull City versus Ipswich Town.

The European programme also featured a major Bundesliga encounter. Bayern Munich hosted Borussia Dortmund in the first league edition of this season's Der Klassiker, with both clubs level on 17 points after seven matches. They were also the only unbeaten teams remaining in the competition.

Bayern entered the contest with Harry Kane attracting attention following his 2026 Ballon d'Or award. The England captain was expected to lead the hosts against a Dortmund side seeking to challenge for the Bundesliga title.

In Spain, Atlético Madrid travelled to face Levante in a LaLiga Matchday 11 fixture. Diego Simeone's team were targeting a seventh consecutive league victory as they looked to maintain pressure on leaders Barcelona.
