Chelsea Agree £7.5m Deal to Sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for £7.5 million, with the Argentina international expected to complete a medical in London. The 33-year-old is set to join Chelsea on a two-year contract, with an option for an additional season.

The move comes after renewed concerns about Robert Sanchez, whose errors contributed to Chelsea conceding twice in Monday’s 3-2 victory over Fulham. Sanchez has been Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2023, but Martinez is expected to provide serious competition and could eventually become the club’s No. 1.

Martinez became available after Aston Villa signed Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma for around £30 million earlier this month. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper had also attracted interest from Juventus, but that proposed move collapsed before Chelsea stepped in.

The transfer continues the increasingly close trading relationship between Chelsea and Villa. The clubs have been involved in several significant deals in recent seasons, including Chelsea’s £117m purchase of Morgan Rogers and the moves involving Ian Maatsen and Omari Kellyman.

Chelsea also have young goalkeeper Mike Penders, who arrived from Genk for £17m, among their options. Martinez’s arrival is therefore likely to create greater competition within Xabi Alonso’s goalkeeping department as Chelsea prepare for a demanding campaign.
