Charlton Athletic Sign Nigeria International Arthur Okonkwo on Loan

Posted : 21 August 2026

Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Nigeria international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan from Wrexham. The move gives the 24-year-old another opportunity to secure regular first-team football after losing his place in Wrexham’s goalkeeping pecking order.

Okonkwo joined Wrexham permanently in 2024 after initially spending the 2023/24 season on loan at the Welsh club. He played an important role as Wrexham secured successive promotions from League Two to League One and then to the Championship.

The 1.99-metre goalkeeper also spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian club Sturm Graz during his development. With Sturm Graz, he won the Austrian Cup before returning to England and continuing his career with Wrexham.

Okonkwo became an important figure for Wrexham during their first Championship campaign. He made 39 league starts in the 2025/26 season and kept 10 clean sheets, while his overall Wrexham spell has included more than 100 competitive appearances.

His final months at Wrexham, however, were affected by increased competition for the starting position. The club strengthened its goalkeeping department with the arrival of Anthony Patterson and also has Wales international Danny Ward, leaving Okonkwo facing a difficult route back into the starting XI.

The situation prompted interest from several Championship clubs. Charlton emerged as one of the leading options, with reports confirming that the Addicks eventually secured the goalkeeper on loan for the 2026/27 campaign.

Okonkwo’s move also comes at an important stage of his international career. FIFA approved his switch of allegiance from England to Nigeria in April after he represented England at youth level. Born in Camden to Nigerian parents, he had previously featured for England from Under-16 to Under-18 level.

The goalkeeper subsequently received his first Super Eagles invitation for the 2026 Unity Cup. He made his Nigeria debut against Zimbabwe at Charlton’s The Valley and helped the Super Eagles win the tournament after victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica. He finished the competition with two clean sheets.

Okonkwo has since earned two senior caps for Nigeria and is now competing with established goalkeepers for a regular place in Eric Chelle’s squad. His move to Charlton should provide another platform to build his club form while strengthening his international ambitions.
