Chaos mars Ilaji FC’s first NLO victory over Ibadan United

Posted : 18 May 2026

Ilaji FC’s long-awaited first victory of the 2026 Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO) season was overshadowed by controversy and crowd unrest following a chaotic encounter against Ibadan United at the Durbar Stadium in Oyo.

Heading into the fixture, Ilaji FC were desperate for a positive result after managing two draws and one defeat in their opening three matches of the campaign.

The Gladiators started brightly and showed greater urgency throughout the contest, with both sides delivering an entertaining and fiercely competitive performance.

Ilaji FC broke the deadlock through Wasiu Oladimeji, whose opener sparked celebrations among the home supporters. Ibadan United, however, quickly responded with an equalizer to ensure the first half ended on level terms.

The game took a dramatic turn in the second half after tensions flared on the touchline. The Ibadan United coach was sent off for misconduct following heated protests over officiating decisions.

Despite the growing tension, Ilaji FC regained the lead through Oladipupo Ifeoluwa, who finished calmly to make it 2-1 for the hosts.

The goal immediately triggered further controversy, with Ibadan United officials and players disputing the referee’s decision. Matters soon escalated as the visitors allegedly refused to continue the game, while members of their technical crew invaded the pitch in protest.

The situation later descended into chaos after some Ibadan United players reportedly confronted and attacked the center referee over claims of unfair officiating.

With disorder taking over the stadium environment, the match was eventually halted before completion.

Although Ilaji FC were leading 2-1 at the time of the abandonment, attention has now shifted to the Nigeria Nationwide League One organizers, who are expected to review the incidents and determine the official outcome of the fixture.

The unfortunate disruption at the Durbar Stadium cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory milestone for the home side. Football enthusiasts and stakeholders now await the disciplinary committee's verdict regarding the chaotic events and the final points allocation. Both clubs will look to re-establish focus as the 2026 NLO season progresses past this turbulent encounter.
