Champions League Race Heats Up as Premier League Nears Final Stretch

Posted : 15 May 2025

With just two rounds left in the Premier League, the title race and relegation battles are settled, but the fight for Champions League qualification remains fiercely competitive. Liverpool have already secured the championship, and Arsenal appear almost certain to join them in Europe’s top club competition.

However, only four points separate third-placed Newcastle from seventh-placed Nottingham Forest, leaving several clubs vying for the remaining Champions League spots.

Newcastle look poised to challenge Arsenal’s hold on second place as they prepare to face the Gunners at the Emirates on Sunday. After a strong run since their League Cup win against Liverpool, Newcastle have lost only once in their last eight league matches, while Arsenal have struggled, winning just one of their past six games.

Victory for Newcastle would propel them above Arsenal, intensifying the battle for Champions League qualification with two games remaining.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa and Chelsea have opportunities to make significant gains ahead of the weekend. Both face tough opponents in Tottenham and Manchester United, respectively—teams focused on their upcoming Europa League final.

A win for Villa could see them climb into fourth place, while Chelsea could leapfrog Newcastle with a victory thanks to superior goal difference. Both clubs are eyeing Champions League qualification after strong seasons despite earlier cup disappointments.

Nottingham Forest, who were among the top contenders for much of the season, have faltered at a crucial stage. A recent draw against relegated Leicester severely damaged their hopes of reaching the Champions League for the first time in decades.

Forest’s manager remains optimistic as they prepare to face West Ham and Chelsea in the final matches, determined to fight for every point. Manchester City, currently fourth, aim to finish strongly after a challenging season by their standards, with games against Bournemouth and Fulham coming up after their FA Cup final appearance.
