Celtic edge past Dundee as Rangers secure narrow win over St Mirren

Posted : 28 April 2024

Celtic reclaimed their three-point lead at the summit of the Scottish Premiership with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Dundee, courtesy of a brace from James Forrest. Forrest, who earned a rare start after his impactful performance in the previous weekend's Scottish Cup semifinal, showcased his goal-scoring prowess with a volley from the edge of the box in the 30th minute. He later orchestrated and concluded the move that extended Celtic's lead midway through the second half.

Despite Celtic's dominance, a late own goal from substitute Adam Idah injected tension into the match, setting up a nervy finale for the traveling fans. Dundee's hopes of salvaging a result were dashed when substitute Michael Mellon failed to convert a chance from a deep free-kick in stoppage time.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers emphasized the importance of securing the three points, acknowledging that while his side may not have been at their best, the victory was crucial in maintaining their title charge.

Meanwhile, Rangers briefly leveled with Celtic on points after securing a 2-1 win over St Mirren earlier in the day. Despite an own goal from St Mirren defender James Bolton giving Rangers the lead in the first half, the visitors equalized through Mikael Mandron's well-placed header.

However, Cyriel Dessers' powerful header in the 74th minute ensured Rangers claimed maximum points. Manager Philippe Clement acknowledged that while the performance may not have been the most impressive, securing the win was paramount as his side aims to maintain their pursuit of Celtic at the top of the table.
