Coach Tope Bulus has won a major legal battle against Katsina United after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) awarded him ₦38 million in compensation for his wrongful dismissal by the Nigeria Premier Football League club.
The ruling, secured through the efforts of African Coaches Connect (ACC), directs Katsina United to pay the compensation before the start of the 2026/2027 football season, bringing to a close a dispute that began following Bulus' dismissal in 2023.
Before approaching CAS, Bulus had sought justice through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Judicial Committee. Although the committee ruled on the matter, the club reportedly failed to comply with its directives, forcing the case to be taken to the sport's highest arbitration body.
The verdict marks another significant achievement for African Coaches Connect, which has continued to advocate for the protection of coaches' contractual rights across the continent. It is the organization's second successful arbitration victory for a Nigerian coach and its ninth across Africa.
Football stakeholders believe the decision sends a strong message to clubs on the need to honour contractual agreements and comply with decisions of recognised football dispute resolution bodies. The ruling is also expected to strengthen confidence in the enforcement of international arbitration decisions within African football.
Attempts to get a reaction from ACC President Eldred Sunju Abbey were unsuccessful, as sources disclosed that he is currently attending the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
The CAS judgment is expected to become a reference point in future contractual disputes involving coaches, further emphasizing accountability and adherence to due process in African football.
The ruling reinforces the importance of respecting contractual obligations and complying with established dispute resolution mechanisms in football. It also highlights the growing role of international arbitration in protecting the rights of coaches across Africa.
