Carrick Vows to Revive Man Utd as Fernandes Captaincy Remains Uncertain

Posted : 23 October 2026

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has expressed confidence that he can turn around the club’s disappointing form but declined to clarify whether Bruno Fernandes will continue as captain.

Carrick described United’s 4-1 defeat to Como on Wednesday as unacceptable, with the result extending their winless streak to seven matches. The loss has increased pressure on the Englishman, who was appointed permanently just five months ago after an encouraging spell as interim manager last season.

United have struggled across competitions and currently sit 13th in the Premier League following their worst start to a campaign in the competition’s history. They have also been eliminated from the League Cup by Brighton and lost two of their opening three Champions League matches.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth, Carrick admitted that his team had lost direction but insisted they could recover. He stressed that players must show greater respect for the club, understand the demands of representing United and rediscover what it takes to win consistently.

Carrick also avoided giving a direct answer when questioned about Fernandes’ captaincy. The Portuguese midfielder had criticised United’s passive approach against Como, arguing that the team needed to press more aggressively and put opponents under greater pressure. Carrick said his priority was the team and the atmosphere within the squad, adding that he would always make decisions in the club’s best interests.

Fernandes’ remarks came shortly after defender Lisandro Martínez voiced concerns about the club’s transfer strategy and lack of investment. The public criticism from two senior players has added to the scrutiny facing Carrick as United attempt to recover from a difficult start to the season.

The former midfielder enjoyed a positive interim spell last season, guiding United to a third-place Premier League finish and a return to the Champions League. However, the team has managed just two victories in 11 matches across all competitions this season, raising questions about Carrick’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has been linked with the United job but declined to discuss the speculation, saying he had too much respect for Carrick to comment. Former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Antonio Conte has also been mentioned as a potential candidate, although he recently stated that he was not in advanced talks with any club and would take his time before returning to management.

Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is another name reportedly being considered should United decide to replace Carrick. For now, Carrick remains focused on turning the team’s fortunes around, with Sunday’s Premier League meeting against Bournemouth presenting an important opportunity to respond to their recent struggles.
